5 Paragraph Essay Format: Hints for College Students

One of the most common essay formats is the five paragraph format. It is the format that you were taught when you were in elementary school. It is designed to offer a basic format that can be used no matter what the subject is or how long it has to be.

Here is a quick guide to help you master the five paragraph essay format for all of your college papers. It will give you the information that you need to write an effective essay.

Tip # 1- Set up

The five essay paragraph format starts with an introduction, follows with three supporting paragraphs, and ends with a conclusion. The introduction paragraph should include background information on your subject. It should also include a thesis sentence.

Tip # 2- Thesis statement

Your thesis statement is the main part of your paper. It is the sentence that explains the reason why you wrote the paper. A thesis statement should list your supporting details. For example, if you wanted to write a paper about how important it is to study, your thesis statement could be “It is important to study so that you can understand important concepts, pass your tests, and take notes to use later”. Each one of the supporting paragraphs will explain in further detail why your topic makes sense.

Tip # 3- Supporting Paragraphs

Each supporting paragraph should explain one of the three topics. In the above example, the first paragraph will discuss how reading your text will understand important concepts. It will then explain how reading your text will help you pass your tests in the second paragraph. The third paragraph will explain how reading your test will help you take effective notes that you can use later in the year.

Tip # 4- Conclusion

Your conclusion should restate the thesis. This will allow your paper to be pulled all together. It is also a good tip to leave your reader with something to think about in the conclusion. Take time and write an effective conclusion.

Tip # 5- Use transitions

Make sure that you use transitions to go from one topic to the next. It will help your paper easier to read and keep your reader on track and thinking about the purpose of your paper.

These tips can be used to write all of your college essays.
