Persuasive Essay Topics for Middle School: Check Out These Tips

A persuasive essay has to convince the reader that you are right. You are not attacking an opponent as you would in an argumentative essay, but you do want the reader to come out of it thinking deeply about what you just wrote. However, it can be hard coming up with topics. Where do you start when there is so much to talk about? So here are a few ideas that you can use to find the best one for you.

  • Law
  • The Economy
  • Society
  • Gun Ownership
  • Feminism

Law is a great place to start for a persuasive essay. For one, there are millions of them all over the world. Choose a law that you love, a law you hate, and a law that doesn’t make sense or is out of date. Write down why you think this way and how the law impacts your life and the lives of others. Maybe you can write up a list of funny laws that we don’t need any more and talk about getting rid of them, or even go into the history of a law, where it can from and how it has changed over time.

The Economy

There is plenty to get into here, whether it’s about the Great Recession, the impact of the one-percent, the role of multi-national corporations or even the ethical right to tax. The economy is always an interesting topic, and you don’t have to be an expert to know the world is going through an upheaval. Talk about the broken economies of third world countries or those in the middle of civil wars. Talk about the rise of India and China or the demise of Europe.

Everyone loves a good gripe when it comes to the younger generation. Take an objective look at Millennials, the use of smart phones and social networks. Look into online bullying or how we now use the web to catch criminals.

Gun Ownership

Are you pro-gun? Are you anti-gun? Do you even care? Whatever you are, this one is a great divisive issue that you can frame your essay around. Are you safer with a gun? What about the rates of stabbings in places where guns are illegal? What about guns in the media and movie and videogame violence?

Feminism is a big issue. A lot of women are taking to the Internet to voice their opinions and we’re moving into a new wave. Do we need feminism? What has it done for society? Where is it going next? Are you a feminist? Are you a chauvinist? Are you neither? There is so much room to maneuver, you could write 100 essays on this topic alone.
